Commonplace book, [1662-1731].

This book, consisting chiefly of original poetry, with some family records and other material, was begun by Thomas Withers in 1662 and carried on by him until the year before his death; it then came into the hands of his eldest son who wrote in it until 1731. The poems of Thomas Withers include many on religious subjects, anagrams on members of his family and friends, epitaphs, and a quantity of poems on special personal events and other occasions. The poems of Edmund Withers are less religious in character, and include besides anagrams similar to his father's, epitaphs and actual tombstone inscriptions. Also present are notes on births, baptisms, marriages, moves, and deaths of family members. The volume consists of 302 pages, some blank, written up to page 159 by Thomas Withers, and beginning at the end and going forward by Edmund Withers.
